SHEKHAWATI: “THE WORLD’S LARGEST OPEN-AIR ART GALLERY” IN RAJASTHAN

The realm of lovely havelis, harking back to the yester years, epitomizes the beauty of Shekhawati – a region that comprises of Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Churu. The land has the largest collection of painted buildings anywhere in the world, laced with innumerable beautiful havelis or grand mansions. An “open-air art gallery "as it is called , it is a haven for a true connoisseur of art and architecture.

The region is not only an open-air art gallery, but also an open book on the country's business history. Marwari merchants - who later became famous entrepreneurs and industrialists, built these havelis. You can trace the roots of just about every major business house of contemporary India to Shekhawati - the Birlas, Bangurs, Goenkas, Poddars, Morarkas, Bajajs, Sethias, Singhanias, Jhunjhunuwalas, Santhalias, Ganeriwals, Tiberewals, Sekhasarias, and so on. Leading business communities among the Marwaris, such as the Agarwals, Oswals and Maheshwaris, originated in Shekhawati. The Marwari merchants and moneylenders from Shekhawati spread all over the country, particularly to Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad, and to Bihar and Assam.

Khejri is the most dominant tree of the western Rajasthan; and for this exact reason, Khejri is called the state tree of Rajasthan. It was decalred state tree in the year 1982-83.Khejri ( Prosopis cineraria) covers about two-thirds of the total geographical area of the State and is of immense significance culturally and economically. The tree supports rural economy like no other wild vegetation does.

The unripe pods are green, and locally known as ‘sangria’ or ‘sangar’. The dried green beans of the khejri are stored and used for cooking round the year. It is one of the ingredients of the famous panchkuta, a local dish cooked with five vegetables. The dried mature pods, locally called ‘kho-kha’, have a sweetish pulp and are also edible and much liked by local children. They are used as fodder for livestock.

In recalling the stalwarts of the freedom struggle, Shri Jamnalal Bajaj’s name is one name that is integral to it for sheer earnestness, single-minded commitment, depth and breadth of contribution and making words into deeds. Born in Rajasthan, Shri Jamnalal Bajaj – the guiding force and inspiration to all, was among the stalwarts who gave of himself completely – mind, body and soul to India’s freedom movement. Freedom fighter, social reformer and humanitarian, Shri Jamnalal Bajaj was the epitome of selflessness and philanthropy. Shri Jamnalalji overreached himself in making words into deeds and in implementing the Constructive Programme of Mahatma Gandhi.

च्यारूंमेर फैल्योड़ा मोटा-मोटा धोरा, पाणी रौ तोड़ौ, आवागमन रै साधनां री अबखाई, हर बरस दुकाळ री मंडरावती काळी छिंया अर पेट-भराई रै साधनां रौ अंगां ई अभाव। इण कारणां सूं अठै रौ जीवण घणौ अबखौ, घणौ कठोर। दुरगम मरुस्थळी भू-भाग अर पहाड़ी इलाकौ होवण रै कारण औ प्रदेस ठेट सूं मुल्क रै दूजै भागां सूं कट्योड़ौ न्यारौ ई रैयौ।
जैसलमेर जिसौ इलाकौ तौ उण वखत इतरौ अडवेळौ अर दुरगम गिणीजतौ के अठै तांई पूगणौ ई घणौ अबखौ काम मानीजतौ। कवि रै सबदां में—

घोड़ा ज्यूं व्है काठ रा,
पिंड कीजै पाषाण।
लोह तणा व्है लूघड़ा,
(जद) देखीजै जैसाण॥

जैसलमेर देखण वास्तै साधारण शरीर सूं पूगणौ ई अंसभव गिणीजतौ। उण वास्तै लकड़ी रै घोड़ै, पत्थर जिसै कठोर शरीर अर लोह री पोशाक री जरूरत महसूस करीजती।
