Rajasthan's history of power production dates back to 1949, when 19 princely states combined to create the state of Rajasthan. With the establishment of the Rajasthan State Electricity Board (RSEB) on July 1, 1957, the power sector in Rajasthan was given priority, and power projects sprang up all over the state. Previously, the Rajasthan State Electricity Board (RSEB) was in charge of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution in the state. However, on July 19, 2000, RSEB was restructured into five separate companies in order to improve infrastructure and separate generation - Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. (RVUNL) transmission - Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd. (RVPN) distribution - Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. (JVVNL), Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. (AVVNL), and Jodhpur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. (JdVVNL).
