Battle of Haldighati
The battle between Mewar and the Mughal Empire began on June 18, 1576, at Haldighati, about 23 kilometers north of Gogunda. Hakim Khan Sur of the Suri dynasty, Bhim Singh of Dodia, Ramdas Rathor (son of Jaimal, who defended Chittor), Bida Mana and his Jhala clansmen assisted Rana Pratap. Rana Mewar's forces were defeated by the imperial mughal forces, and Rana Pratap fled the battlefield and sought shelter in Koliyari, a hilly town west of Gogunda (southern Mewar). Maharana Pratap was able to reclaim most of his kingdom's lost territories in the west by 1579.
Jauhar at Chittorgarh
Jauhar was a Hindu custom of mass self-immolation of women and children. This custom was followed to avoid capture, enslavement, and rape by the invaders after the defeat during the war. Rani Padmini held the first Jauhar of Chittorgarh in 1303 after Allauddin Khilji defeated Raja Rawal Ratan Singh.
